Estee Menzel was born a Hungarian Judaic emigrant family in the area of Queens of New York in 1907. Her father ran a Hardware store and she was the ninth child in the family. Asidy’s uncle is a pharmacist; he likes to modulate a variety of chemical agents in the lab in daily life. In the 30s of last century, Estee got a cream formula from her uncle, she produced products according to the formula, and then sold to those female customers in beauty salons in Manhattan, New York.
In 1946, Asidy Lauder and her husband Nusef Lauder founded their own company with 50,000 U.S. dollars in New York, — Estee Lauder Companies. The company sold only four kinds of products at the first: Clean oil, creams, lotions and all effective emollient cream. At the first two years, the business of Estee Lauder was not large. In 1948, by right of superior eloquence, Mrs. Lauder had persuaded the famous big department stores in New York “SAKS Fifth Avenue” to allow her to open her own monopoly counters. Estée Lauder’s fame as hairdressing and skin care product of top quality rose quickly.
In 1953, Estee Launder company launched the Youth Dew, which is a kind of fragrant bath oil and can be used as the perfume. Youth Dew was very successful in the market and broke the monarchical position of French perfume. It also made high-class perfume not the only luxury for a few ladies. Since then, perfume of Estée Lauder has been upheld by the fashion world, for example, its BEAUTIFUL perfume the advertisement of which always has bride as its leading actress.
As a matter of fact, the most famous words of Mrs Lauder is that I have been keeping promotin sales every day of work in my life. She not only has a keen insight to fashion trend, but also she is a marketing expert in the business. She had two new creation on the cosmetic marketing: First, distribute trial pack in small package free of charge, because she believed that “good product will speak for yourself”; Another is that when buying products, customers can have giveaway of the same brand they buy. Such inventions have become the classice strategies of promoting cosmetics at present.
In 1960s, Estee Lauder began to expand her business into the international markets, entered the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Germany and Japan. Most of the franchised stores of Estée Lauder are set in slap-up shopping malls, like Harold in London and Lafayette in Paris and so on. The more expensive and fashionable the places are, the more they meet the requirement of Mrs. Lauder.
Now, Estée Lander still keeps strong family colors and four members of its highest management level are the family members. In April 2004, Mrs Lauder, who established the company, died in her home at Manhattan, at the age of 97. In 1998, Mrs. Lauder was rated by “Time” magazine as the 20th century’s most influential business genius, and she was the only female.
